Curseable of Lived Experience

Overstreet is a self-taught mixed media artist whose creative journey began in his sixtieth year. A Detroit native, Overstreet's path has been one of profound transformation, marked by heroic service in Vietnam and a subsequent chapter as a union president within the railroad industry. Following an abrupt departure, he found himself at the unlikely genesis of community, purchasing a fire-ravaged building in Detroit's Cass Corridor. This space blossomed into The Old Miami, a celebrated sanctuary now marking its forty-fifth year. This unique establishment, a haven for veterans, neighborhood residents, students, the LGBTQ+ community, medical professionals, sports enthusiasts, original musicians, and artists of every imaginable discipline, stands as a testament to the power of convergence and coexistence - a vibrant microcosm unlike any other. As the echoes of his time in Vietnam, particularly the devastating impact of Agent Orange on himself and his comrades, began to resonate more deeply, Overstreet's wife, Julie, gifted him a wealth of art supplies on his sixtieth birthday. With her continued stewardship of The Old Miami, alongside a dedicated staff and Daniel's ongoing guidance, he has been able to fully embrace a lifelong artistic passion that had remained dormant since childhood. Seventeen years and thousands of artworks later, this exhibition offers a glimpse into Overstreet's singular vision. We invite you to experience these unique pieces, thoughtfully presented by Michael and Will, creations born from a remarkable life and unlike anything you will encounter.
